Frequency and severity of traffic accident injuries in patients treated in the emergency department of clinical Copacabana S.R.L., Cochabamba, 2023

Introduction: Traffic accidents are a global issue, causing 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million injuries annually. They are the leading cause of death among young people aged 15 to 29. This study analyzes the frequency and severity of injuries in patients treated for traffic accidents at Clinical Copacabana S.R.L., Cochabamba, during 2023. Methodology: The research, with a quantitative, retrospective, cross-sectional, and descriptive approach, analyzed 291 patients admitted to the emergency department for traffic accidents at Clinical Copacabana in 2023. Checklist tools and direct observation were used to collect data from medical records. Confidentiality, anonymity, and ethical compliance were ensured, and a detailed analysis was performed for reliable results. Results: In 2023, 291 patients were admitted to the emergency department of Clinical Copacabana S.R.L. for traffic accidents. Among them, 35% were aged 20 to 29 years, 69% were men, and the most frequent injuries were polytrauma (32%). A total of 86% of the patients were not under the influence of alcohol. Automobiles were involved in 65% of cases, highlighting the need for preventive measures. Discussion: This study underscores traffic accidents as a public health issue in Cochabamba. In 2023, 35% of those affected were aged 20 to 29 years, and 69% were men. Polytrauma accounted for 32% of injuries. Most accidents involved automobiles (65%). Strengthening prevention strategies, road safety education, and infrastructure improvement is recommended.
